Going extra mile

24/06/2008 5:23:00 PM
Most young people attending World Youth Day in Sydney this July will arrive in a car, or on a plane, train or bus.

Not Catherine Burke, a young Irish cyclist who has been living in Adelaide for about 18 months.

The first overnight stop on the journey was spent in Nuriootpa on Monday.

Catherine, who has never owned a car, has chosen to go ‘an extra mile’ and cycle the 1600km from her home town to Sydney.

For her this is not just a bike ride - it’s a pilgrimage and a message that Christian faith will remain alive in the youth.

It is also a mission that will raise money to help Tiwi Island and Vietnam youth attend Sydney’s World Youth Day events.

Before leaving Nuriootpa on Tuesday morning, for the second day on her journey, Father Mark Sexton offered her the blessing of the pilgrims.

On of Catherine’s longest days on the road will be today (Wednesday) as she travels the 170km from Renmark to Mildura.

World Youth Day is the largest youth event in the world.

It is organised by the Catholic Church and brings young people together from around the globe to celebrate and learn about their faith.

The event will attract more than 125,000 international visitors to Sydney - more than the 2000 Olympics. It will also be the first Australian visit for Pope Benedict.

To find out more about how you can make a donation to Catherine’s cause check out the website www.goanextramile.org/ on the internet.

Father Mark is also travelling to the World Youth Day festival, which will be held from July 15-20.

He will accompany a group from Riverton.
