Gawler’s Jack Bobridge is going to the Olympics.
Bobridge, who will celebrate his 19th birthday on July 13, has been nominated by Cycling Australia to be part of the track endurance team for the Beijing Olympics.
The nominations have been forwarded to the Australian Olympic Committee for ratification which is expected to be a formality in Jack’s case.
“I’m lost for words,” said the star cyclist. “It is a bit overwhelming, awesome really, but the job is not done yet.”
Bobridge is one of six riders selected to compete for the four positions in the 4000 metre team’s pursuit.
“I don’t want to just be part of the team.
“I want to ride at the Olympics and will be challenging myself at training to be the best I can.”
Bobridge’s work ethic has impressed cycling coach Ian McKenzie.
“Jack has gone up a level since riding at the World Champs in Manchester in March,” McKenzie said.
In Manchester, Bobridge was part of the team which rode in the 4000 metre team pursuit qualifying placing fourth but was replaced in the bronze medal ride off in which Australia took third.
“I wanted to have a look at all riders in Manchester and it was not because Jack rode poorly that he was substituted in the medal ride off,” McKenzie said.
“Since then Jack has been part of a squad which has ridden in Italy, France and Germany and he has done very well.
He was also part of a team which trained in Ghent in Belgium and it was after that he was selected for the Olympics.”
Bobridge, fellow Olympic track endurance rider Mark Jamieson and Katie Mactier are training in Adelaide at present.
The Olympic squad will fly to to Germany in July for a four week camp before heading to Beijing on August 8.
