Thoroughbred Racing South Australia, and a member of the Gawler redevelopment steering committee confirmed the option.

“Economically, it would be more viable to have the home straight of the racecourse situated on the Adelaide Road side of the venue,” Mr Bentley said.

“But there are a number of issues to be overcome if that was to be a reality.”

Currently, the home straight is situated closest to the passing railway line.

Mr Bentley said the first consideration was to see if the new track to be constructed could fit with the home straight on the opposite side of the current configuration.

“The shape, obviously, is the most important aspect and it would be up to the track designers to see if it is feasible.

“Another issue would be to see if the Gawler Council would allow the removal of a number of gum trees currently growing along Adelaide Road.

“Because if we have the track with the home straight on that side, we would need to build the new multi-function centre there as well.”

Mr Bentley said having the new centre on Adelaide Road would be financially rewarding.

“It would make it much easier for people to use for receptions, conferences and other meetings as well as be more appealing to passing traffic,” he said.

“The third issue would be the setting sun.”

Mr Bentley said spectators could be forced to look straight into the sun especially during the summer months.

“So there are a number of issues to be considered but it would irresponsible of the steering committee not to look at all options regarding the redevelopment.”

Mr Bentley said neither he nor the members of the Gawler and Barossa Jockey Club had been notified of any renewed interest by the Gawler Harness Racing Club to set up a track as part of the redevelopment.

“I would say if the harness club is interested they had better act quickly as the steering committee wants to make a final decision on the Gawler upgrade plans within a few months.”
