The new Nuriootpa Library at the Barossa Council administration centre has begun to take shape.
Contractors have begun the internal fit out.
The cost-neutral move of the Nuriootpa Library involved was based on the availability of $750,000.
These finances are being used at the new site for a complete internal fit-out, the upgrading of the lighting to meet Australian Standards for public spaces and the replacement of the existing library furniture and fittings.
The council has also allocated extra funds to the site, to ensure the 700 square metre floor space at the new facility is maximised.
According to Andrew Cameron, Council Corporate and Community Services director, an extra $120,000 will be used primarily for new shelving and furniture/fittings, particularly for the new children’s activity area, the new local history room, and the expanded youth and study areas.
“And to cater for the significantly increased collection size of books, DVDs, CDs, newspapers and magazines,” Mr Cameron said.
“Staff are excited at being able to offer a more inviting space in which the community enjoy spending time connecting not only with the resources we have to offer, but with other community members.”
The new library is expected to be open by mid-October.
Staff are also in the process of planning:
• Additional programs for children and adults
• Short training courses
• Spaces for community groups to meet
• Additional home delivery services
• To make the collection more accessible to borrowers by having more display opportunities
• Bookshop style subject areas
• ‘Quick choices’ for those in a hurry.
Meanwhile, the Barossa Council public libraries will benefit from more than $100,000 funding this financial year (2008/09) to purchase of new library books.
The majority - 85 per cent - of the funds for new library book stock has come from external grants.
