Rams first home loss

17/06/2008 6:59:00 PM
The Barossa Rams rugby union team on Saturday suffered their first home loss since moving to Lyndoch Oval in 2006.

In a highly-anticipated match against table toppers Elizabeth, the Rams looked in with a chance for 65 minutes before finally going down 10-36.

The first half was a tight affair with both sides struggling to make sense of many of the refereeing decisions.

Both teams were penalised heavily at the breakdown and it was Elizabeth that was able to take advantage first when they were awarded a penalty 30 metres out and were able to gain the 3 points.

From a series of broken plays the Rams found an overlap on the right with the ball coming to captain Brad Mackay who ran around the fullback to score close to the posts. Shaw kicked the conversion and Barossa led 7-3.

The lead was short lived as soon after the restart Elizabeth put through a kick that was easily fielded by the Rams winger Pete Muchamore. His attempted pass inside missed its mark and a lurking Elizabeth player ran in from 40 metres for the easy try. The conversion gave Elizabeth the 10-7 lead.

The Rams were back on terms just before half time with a Shaw penalty kick giving them three points and at half time the score was 10-10.

The second half started with 15 minutes of seesawing defence with both backlines having to work hard to hold out the other. The break came when Elizabeth found space behind the Rams line by kicking over the top and using their pace to chase the kick and attack the Barossa line. This tactic brought two quick tries, both converted that saw the game ripped from the Rams in the space of five minutes.

Final Score:- Barossa Rams 10 Elizabeth 36

Scorers:- Try - B Mackay; Conversion - T Shaw; Penalty - T Shaw.

Best Players:- T Shaw, J Cameron, T Reithmuller.

This week the Rams As have the bye while the Bs travel to Brighton for an 11.20am start in a match which could see them gain a place in the four.
