FREELING’S Kate Maynard has just returned from America after representing Australia in the Mounted Games team.
The 21-year-old spent two weeks in the United States in May.
“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity – I loved the experience and we finished fourth overall,” Maynard said.
“I’m looking forward to being involved at a committee level at the world championships in Sydney in September.”
Maynard competed in two competitions, one in Maryland and the other in New York state.
She has been riding for 10 years and only took up Mounted Games six years ago. She also has a passion for tent-pegging along with competing in pony club, dressage, showjumping and eventing.
The Mounted Games Association of Australia holds competitions each month in South Australia.
It is hoped the Mounted Games will soon be included in the equestrian events at the Olympics.
Cummins accreditation
BL&G Netball Association president Lee-Anne Cummins has just received her level two coaching accreditation.
In conjunction, she has been rewarded with a trip to the Australian Institute of Sport for some elite coaching.
The only trouble is timing, as the regional academy where Cummins has been an integral part of the management is also being run at the same time.
Anniversary lottery
Nuriootpa Hockey Club players are going to be enjoying a brand new equipment shed this year, thanks to a fundraising drive by local volunteers.
The club, which is celebrating its 30th year, has nine teams of junior and senior players who will benefit from the new shed, which will be used to house all of the club’s match day and training equipment.
The volunteers are raising the funds for the shed through the Australian Central Community Lottery. This is the only lottery where participating community groups get to keep 100 per cent of the money they raise.
All the costs, including prizes, marketing and administration is covered by the Credit Union.
Seeking talent
Zone coaches Craig Griffiths, Troy Lehmann and Tim Jackson will be at Freeling this Saturday for the inter-league game.
They will be looking for players in preparation for the SA Country Championships in early July.
“All players who participate in this year’s State Country Championships will be vying for selection in the SA Country team that will compete in the Australian Country Championships in Shepparton, Victoria in late July,” Jackson explained.
Still in contention
The Lower North golf team had another great win in last Sunday’s metro pennant competition with a commanding six-matches-to-one victory against Penfield.
“This penultimate round was played on the Mt Lofty course,” team manager Peter Trenorden said.
“It is now a challenge between Lower North and ‘The Vines’ as to which team will play Tea Tree Gully in the final.
“This will be decided at the Gawler course next Sunday, June 8, when Lower North play Mt Osmond and The Vines play Mt Lofty.”
Winners for Lower North last Sunday included the in form Richard Nairn (3/2), Darren Salter (4/3), John Nairn (2/1), Mark Watkins (2/1), Paul Pridham (6/5) and Damien Noack (4/3). The only loser was Rhys Lyons, who had a thrilling contest, losing his match at the 18th hole.
Foster’s selection
The younger Foster sibling, Joel is already starting to prove his football credentials.
He was named in the state squad after his performances with the Barossa and Light in the annual SAPSASA competition.
To add to the excitement for the Foster family, older brother Luke made his BL&G A grade debut for Kapunda in their win over Nuriootpa.
“It was a pretty exciting weekend for the family and naturally both mum and dad are very proud,” Veronica ‘Floss’ Foster said.
Coached by Tanunda mentor Steve Lubcke the SAPSASA team won four matches and finished equal fifth in a 10-team competition in 2008. Tanunda’s William Mudge also performed admirably.
Joel Foster and another Kapunda footballer Thomas Williams will compete in the national titles in Melbourne from July 20-26.
