Gawler Central 45

Angaston 32

A fully-focused Gawler Central came away with a 13-goal victory over an unsettled Angaston at Gawler Central.

After an 8-all first quarter Gawler Central won each of the last three quarters confirming they are again going to be a force in the race to the 2008 premiership.

Coach Graham Fischer was pleased with the continued work ethic of the group.

“All the girls are enjoying their netball and working together to produce quality netball,” Graham said. “The defensive pressure created the turnovers and we were able to capitalise and come away with a strong win.”

Captain Leanne Wagener at wing attack was back to her scintillating best with her son Daniel in attendance. Goal keeper Stephanie Noack and midcourter Kate Woodlands with her fiancé Hugh over from Sydney also played superbly.

Angaston, who were forced to cover Kath Teakle (overseas) and Tamara Holliday (work) from last week’s team, fought hard but found the Tigers too strong. Heidi Dunn moved from wing attack into goal attack while Ange Moulds came up from the 2s into wing attack.

Tobi Jackson-Miles replaced Holliday at goal keeper.

“Our decision making wasn’t the best,” said acting coach Anita Bone. “Considering the changes and with the new attack line, the girls did pretty well.”

Angaston’s best was centre Carly Clarke while goal shooter Shelly Cox was her influential self.

Willaston 55

Tanunda 32

Willaston came off the bye with a comfortable 23-goal win over Tanunda.

“It was a great team performance by all the girls,” Willaston coach Sue Brown said. “We made a few positional changes to look at some new options.

“Midcourter Nicole Russell sustained an ankle injury in the third quarter which forced us to reshuffle again. All things considered it was a fairly comprehensive win.”

Sue said Willaston’s best were Liesel Dunstan and Stacey Brouwers who combined well in goals and Leah Torzyn and Nicole Lemke who were very tight in defence.

Tanunda coach Liz Smith noted the improvement again of her group.

“We had three good quarters and one poor one which cost us dearly,” Liz said.

“It was the third quarter but we also had injury problems with Toni Martin (ankle) and Jess Smith (finger). But we can see some signs of improvement.”

Liz said her best players had been Jess Smith (centre), goalies Alicia Renshaw and Megan Hoklas as well as defender Linda Tscharke.

Nuriootpa 42

South Gawler 38

After trailing early, Nuriootpa finished strongly to grab a four-goal win over South Gawler.

On their home court, South took a lead in the first quarter but Nuriootpa fought back for an even tussle over the last three quarters.

Nuriootpa coach Heather Vogt paid tribute to her side’s renowned defensive pressure.

“The girls’ persistent defence across the court was rewarded,” Heather said. “It was also supported by accurate shooting by Bec Galler.”

Nuriootpa’s Vine Inn award went to Abby Asplin while the Angas Park Hotel award went to Bec Galler.

South coach Di Malbut was very disappointed.

“It was close all game but we made a couple of errors in the last two minutes of the last quarter which cost us the game,” Di said.

“Overall I was happy with the way the girls played.

“Nuriootpa do a midcourt block and last year we couldn’t break it very well but this time we used patience and it paid off.”

Di said new recruit Alicia Mackenzie played the whole game and had combined very well in the goal circle with Vanessa Kirby.

“I was impressed with the feeding of Tracey Sheridan and Tara Gallarello while Kara Tunbridge was very hard at the ball and shut down their wing attack.”

South’s best were goal attack Vanessa Kirby with 98 per cent accuracy and Kara Tunbridge at wing defence.

Kapunda 48

Freeling 40

As usual, Light Council rivals Kapunda and Freeling had an exciting tussle with only one goal separating the sides at the final change.

But it was the experience of Kapunda which came to the fore on the back of the shooting hand of Tab Mackenzie during the final 15 minutes for an eight-goal win.

Playing coach Penny Ryan said Freeling had applied excellent defensive pressure and had made her side work hard for the win.

“I made a few positional changes for the start of the match and had the first half off myself to watch the game from the sidelines,” Penny said.

Kapunda’s best were Mackenzie who shot 35 goals and midcourter Stacey Burgess.

Penny said goal shooter Janelle Sheehan had again popped a shoulder which had meant Tab had gone to goal shooter in the last quarter and Lana Farley had moved from wing defence to goal attack.

“We will have to assess the injury this week to see if she can take the court against Angaston.”

Freeling coach Deb Meaney was upset with the loss.

“The game was there to be won and after three good quarters we just dropped the pressure,” Deb said.

“I have seen a lot of positive signs over the last three weeks but it was disappointing not to be able to go on after being in a winning position.

“We have to eliminate the silly errors and play possession netball.”

Goalie Kirsten Muster, who spent time at both goal attack and goal shooter was Freeling’s best shooting 26 goals.
