South Gawler 67

Tanunda 33

South Gawler notched their first win of the season with an emphatic victory over Tanunda which pleased coach Di Malbut.

“We wanted to beat what the ‘Barracker’ had said with us winning by 11 goals and we did by 37 in the end,” Di said.

“We had a slow start but started to put in the pressure at the end of the second quarter and went away with it in the second half.

“Alicia Mackenzie was off the first half but then came on and shot very well. Vanessa (Kirby) and Paula (Dean) were in goals to start with then Paula had her debut at wing defence in the second half and played very well.

“Tracy (Sheridan) was in wing attack to start then went into goal defence in the second quarter to try and shut down their short and quick goal attack and she did her job very well.”

Tracy Sheridan, goal keeper Kylie Brown and Vanessa Kirby were South’s best.

Tanunda coach Liz Smith said poor decision making had let her side down.

“We had some good patches but then let ourselves down at other times,” Liz said.

“Overall I think we are improving although the scoreline may not reflect it.”

Tanunda’s best were circle defenders Rosie Robinson and Bec Blenkiron while Gabi Marschall at wing attack had her best match of the season.

Kapunda 54

Nuriootpa 44

The focus of the ‘Pitty’ Tribute night in the evening did not distract the Kapunda netballers from chalking up a 10-goal win over tough rivals Nuriootpa.

“I have to admit that I thought the work a lot of the girls did to make the tribute to Mark Pitman night a success could have meant their thoughts weren’t as focused as they needed to be for such a big game,” playing coach Penny Ryan said.

“But they are so professional I need not have worried. We won all four quarters, not by big margins.

“We didn’t capitalise as much as we could have on turnovers but credit to Nuri they pressured us throughout.”

Kapunda’s best were goalies Lana Farley and Janelle Sheehan along with goal defence Hannah Thomas.

Nuriootpa coach Heather Vogt was happy with her side’s commitment.

“This was a great game to watch - well contested and a high skill level,” Heather said.

“Kapunda did not concede the lead from early in the game, however the margin was always close. The shooting percentage by both Bec Galler and Sally Lloyd improved significantly after last week’s loss, and the pressure applied all over the court, made Kapunda earn every goal.”

Lana Kaesler, playing her first game in senior one, played maturely winning the Vine Inn Hotel award, and Kylie Falkenberg’s improved efforts won her the Winery of the Week award.

Willaston 56

Barossa District 40

Willaston’s unbeaten run continued with an impressive 16-goal victory over reigning premier Barossa District.

Coach Sue Brown was able to rotate her squad of nine players each quarter and still come away with a strong win.

“It is important for the young girls to learn about senior one netball and they don’t learn much sitting on the bench,” Sue said.

“I was very pleased with the way all the team adapted and felt everyone contributed to the win. One negative was I felt we made too many passing errors but as a group the girls worked well.”

Goalies Jess Lea and Emma Richards combined beautifully and shot very well while goal keeper Kirby Wilson took intercepts, rebounds and proved a tough opponent for the Barossa goalies.

Barossa was disadvantaged with playing coach Mel Rendell absent for a wedding in Sydney and also lost defender Carly Wilkin before the match. The positive was that smart midcourt Chelsea Jaensch played her first game for the club.

Captain Taryn Wills said while the club had been disappointed with the loss she had been very pleased with the endeavour.

“We had some lapses which let us down but the girls battled hard against a quality team.”

Barossa’s best were given as defender Bronwyn Venning and goal shooter Kristal Ruchs but versatile Carolyn Westley is worthy of mention for a great three quarters in centre before going into goal attack and Chelsea Jaensch also did well.

Angaston 45

Freeling 39

Favourites Angaston had to overcome a first half deficit before scoring a six-goal win over a determined Freeling.

Freeling started superbly to lead by five goals at quarter time, and still led by two at the main break before Angaston eventually took control with a powerful third quarter.

“We were outplayed early,” said coach Anna Cameron.

“The girls got better as the game progressed and finished off strongly in the last half.”

Consistent centre Carly Clarke continued her excellent form while goal shooter Shelly Cox and defender Jane Ryan also did well.”

For Freeling coach Deb Meaney it was a disappointing end after such a promising start.

“We started the game strongly,” Deb said. “Our intensity and decision making was good and we took Angaston by surprise.

“Unfortunately we couldn’t match their physical attack towards the game in the next three quarters.

“Our goalies played well considering the close attention they received with good percentages.”

Freeling’s best players were Heidi Goers at goal defence and wing defence and Karla Leske at wing attack.
