Barossa District 55
Tanunda 32
Barossa District returned to the winning list with a 21-goal win over Tanunda.
Playing coach Mel Rendell said the side had added experienced defender Casey Allchurch to their group and she had done well on debut at goal keeper.
“Casey hopes to play for the rest of the season depending on work commitments and she should add to the team,” Mel said.
But on the negative side, Barossa has lost versatile Carolyn Westley for an indefinite period with a neck injury.
“Carolyn has been troubled for a while but after Saturday it was decided for her to have a scan and take a break for a while. We also lost Chelsea Jaensch through an ankle injury on Saturday but hopefully she will be back this week.
“On Saturday, I felt our second and third quarters were good but our first and fourth were a bit average. But it was good to win.”
Casey Allchurch and Carolyn Westley were Barossa’s best players.
Tanunda coach Liz Smith said she had been pleased with an improvement in her side.
“We actually led at quarter-time and the team worked really well in that term,” Liz said.
“Our last quarter also was okay, it was just the middle two when we found it hard to get goals that Barossa got away. But we did have some good passages of play so were able to come away with some positives.”
Tanunda’s best were circle defenders Linda Tscharke and Bec Blenkiron while goal attack Megan Hoklas also moved well and shot some nice goals.
Freeling 49
South Gawler 42
Freeling’s desire and ability to play four quarters saw them overcome an early deficit to prove too strong for South Gawler.
South led by two goals at quarter-time, scores were level at half-time then Freeling took control to lead by four at three-quarter time and come away with a strong win.
“I was really happy that the girls played for four quarters on Saturday,” said Freeling coach Deb Meaney. “There were still some flat spots during quarters but they really worked hard for the entire game.
“I have been working on their mental toughness and the results came through with the win. We had 20 more shots on goal than South so really we should have scored a few more than we did.”
Freeling’s best were Kelly Gerschwitz at goal attack and goal shooter and wing defender Ashleigh Heinrich.
South coach Di Malbut said it was a bad loss.
“It was a game that should have given us the two points but Freeling wanted it more and South girls just went through the motions of playing netball,” Di said.
“Once again they didn’t capitalise on their turnovers and bad passing and decision-making was the difference. All-in-all it was a very disappointing day.”
Vanessa Kirby was consistent all game playing goal attack in the first half then at wing defence in the second half. Paula Dean shot well with only three misses playing goal shooter for three quarters and one at goal attack.
Gawler Central 53
Kapunda 50
Gawler Central returned from a two-week break to score a three-goal win over Kapunda in a tight see-sawing affair where the lead changed throughout the game.
Kapunda came out strongly to lead by one at quarter-time and stretched to three at the main-break before Central stepped up with a 15-10 third quarter to seize the lead and go on to win.
“It was an excellent game of netball and the momentum changed continually,” said Central coach Graham Fischer. “I thought our defensive pressure proved crucial as going into attack we were a bit rusty not having played for a fortnight.
“Defensively everyone worked hard and we were able to capitalise often enough on the turnovers to come away with a win.”
Centre Michelle Kelcey provided drive throughout to be best and her feeding to the goalies was outstanding. Goal shooter Renee Schumacher continued her excellent season and Karen Wozniak in the defence circle was brilliant.
Kapunda playing coach Penny Ryan agreed it had been a tremendous game.
“It was disappointing to come away with a loss but after chalking up a string of wins it gave us an idea where we are in terms of the competition,” Penny said. “The momentum switched continually throughout the game and Central were in front at the final whistle. Our defensive pressure was very good all day.”
Penny Ryan at centre was Kapunda’s best while goalies Tab Mackenzie and Lana Farley worked well in a solid team performance.
Willaston 48
Nuriootpa 34
Willaston grabbed an early four goal break over Nuriootpa then kept building the margin to finish with a 14-goal win.
Coach Sue Brown said all her players had contributed to the victory.
“We had a few players with slight niggles or illness so there was rotation throughout the game but everyone played their part,” Sue said.
Emma Richard started at goal shooter and after half-time went to goal attack to be best player while Alix Stanton did a top job at wing defence all game. Jess Lea came on to goal shooter at half-time and shot superbly while Liesel Dunstan and Nicole Lemke also received praise from the coach.
Coach Heather Vogt said Nuriootpa had battled hard.
“Abby Asplin in centre controlled the court while defenders Jodie Kurtz and Sally Lloyd combined brilliantly to turn the ball over regularly keeping us in the game,” Heather said. “Injury and illness in the team took a toll, but despite that we finished strongly.”
Nuriootpa’s best were Bec Galler (Angas Park Hotel award) and Abby Asplin (Barossa Roadhouse award).
