Gawler Central 56
Tanunda 24
The scoreline doesn’t tell the story with top side Gawler Central’s 32-goal win over bottom side Tanunda.
The first three-quarters of the clash were tight and while Central won all three, their margins were only seven, four and three goals respectively. It was a 20-2 last quarter which saw the margin blow out.
“Credit to Tanunda they really put pressure on us,” Central coach Graham Fischer said. “Their endeavour and enthusiasm forced poor decision-making for the first three quarters and we were disappointed with our efforts.
“Credit to the team they turned it around with an outstanding last quarter and that is what we need to continue into this week’s match against Freeling.”
Central’s best were midcourt Sarah Young and goal defence Karen Wozniak.
“I wish we could have stopped the game at three-quarter time,” said Tanunda coach Liz Smith. “We are improving each week and the girls are remaining enthusiastic.
“Jacqui (Roberts) tried hard at goal shooter but we really needed another goalie to help goal attack Megan Hoklas who shot brilliantly.
“It is going to take a few years to really turn it around for the club but I think we are on a path forward.”
Tanunda’s best were centre Jess Smith who worked hard throughout and goal attack Megan Hoklas whose first three quarters were outstanding.
Freeling 47
Nuriootpa 36
Freeling’s run of improved form continued with a strong 11-goal win over Nuriootpa.
“It was our first win over Nuri in five years,” said an elated coach Deb Meaney.
With fourth spot on the premiership table up for grabs, the victory kept Freeling’s finals’ hopes alive and made Nuriootpa’s chances much tougher.
“We have been concentrating on having a good warm up and being focused early and it has been working. Possession of the ball and not forcing into the goalies has also been good and our defence has really been holding us together.”
Goal keeper Lisa Van Leeuwen, goal attack Kelly Gerschwitz and goal defence Jacinta Ahrens were Freeling’s best.
Nuriootpa coach Heather Vogt realised the significance of the match.
“It was an important game for both teams,” Heather said.
“We carried the ball well through the middle. Rachael Gerhardy created some turnovers until an unfortunate knock forced her off the court.
“Kylie Falkenberg was dominant on the wing and Jo Jenkins and Jodie Kurtz rebounded well. The endeavour of the Nuriootpa girls was solid, but Freeling had a stronger commitment to the ball and shot well, making it difficult for Nuriootpa to turn the game.”
Winery of the Week award went to Kylie Falkenberg and the Barossa Road House award was given to Jo Jenkins.
Kapunda 62
Willaston 57
Kapunda inflicted Willaston’s second straight defeat by five goals in a high quality shootout at Kapunda.
The win avenged Kapunda’s round one loss to Willaston as the sides shot a total of 119 goals meaning virtually a goal was scored every 30 seconds of the match.
Kapunda coach Penny Ryan said it had been an exciting and tough game.
“I think the last quarter was 18-17,” Penny said. “I know I was exhausted at the finish.
“It was a battle of the goalies with everyone shooting really well.
“We got away to lead by five goals at quarter time but it certainly felt closer than that.
“The girls were good that they were able to raise the intensity when Willaston started to challenge but we have to work on making sure we don’t let sides get back when we have an advantage.”
Kapunda’s best were centre Penny Ryan and goal attack Tab Mackenzie.
Willaston coach Sue Brown said it had been an excellent game but a slow start had again proved costly.
“As with our loss to Gawler Central a week earlier, we were trailing early and always playing catch up,” Sue said.
“We got within two several times but Kapunda just kept answering all our challenges.”
Sue said star defender Leah Torzyn had been unavailable but it was up to the rest of the team to cover the loss or absence of any player. Willaston’s best were goal attack Emma Richards, goal shooter Jess Lea and goal keeper Kirby Wilson.
Angaston 39
Barossa District 30
Angaston consolidated fourth spot on the premiership table with a nine-goal win over injury-hit Barossa District.
Coach Anna Cameron said her side had regrouped after last week’s loss to South Gawler and the second half had been good.
“It was pretty even to half-time but we were able to break away in the third quarter,” Anna said. “Then in the last quarter we were able to build on our advantage.”
Centre Carly Clarke and wing defence Ali Eberhard were Angaston’s best.
Barossa coach Mel Rendell said there were many positives despite the loss.
“We had a different starting seven again this week and a few of them were carrying injuries,” Mel said. “We fought hard in the first half, and then the injuries and inexperience caught up with us after half-time.
“But the rest of the season is about developing young players and getting some depth in the club.”
Barossa’s best were captain Taryn Wills who was back to her best at wing attack and showed excellent leadership and goalie Kristal Ruch who was a solid influence despite playing with a back injury.
