Mixed Rams results

8/05/2008 12:25:00 PM
Mixed results for the Barossa Rams against Port Adelaide on Saturday at Gleneagles Reserve.

The As came home with a win but unfortunately a loss for the Bs.

Barossa hit the young Port Adelaide side hard from the outset and soon showed they were superior both in attack and defence.

With the front three Niall Iley, James Kirkman and Nathan Corby, all under 20, the Rams scrum had a new look to it and proved to be a stable platform for the Barossa halfback, Jamie Cameron, to get good ball for the backs.

The forwards were also strong at the breakdowns with best on ground. Loren Brown was outstanding with his workrate after playing much of the earlier game.

The Rams scored their first points when Phil Warren was put into space by number 10 Tore Shaw. Warren was able to score close to the posts making for an easy conversion to Shaw.

The Rams lead was cut soon after when Port were able to score a try out wide in one of the few times they penetrated the Barossa 22.

Before the break the continued pressure on the Port defence forced them into errors giving Shaw another two attempts at penalty goals which he had no trouble converting to take the Rams to the break leading 13-5.

The second half saw the Rams continue to dominate.

Shaw, Warren and Todd Reithmuller were strong in defence and also made plenty of metres in attack. With the loose forwards, Brad Mackay and Jason Cozzitorto, continuing to get plenty of the ball and Paul Brown and Corby hitting up hard the Rams were once more holding Port back in their own half.

Cleve Daniels was strong at full back, introducing pace to the backline when needed and Nathan Clifford battled cramp while closing down any Port attacks on his wing.

Barossa scored the only points of the half. Captain Brad Mackay going blind off the back of a scrum 30 metres from the line and then shrugging off tacklers to score the try, converted by Shaw. Then Shaw kicked a penalty goal from 42 metres which scraped over to finish off the scoring.

This Saturday the Bs have the Bye while the Rams As take on Elizabeth at Womma Reserve kicking off at 2pm.

The Rams Juniors continue to train at Lyndoch on Thursday nights from 5.30pm in preparation for their season starting on May 17. Any junior players wishing to play for the Rams are welcome to attend.
