Don’t worry about bending it like Beckham, Lauren Lagana is set to make her own mark in women’s soccer.
The 18-year-old from Lyndoch is a recipient of a four-year US college scholarship for soccer with all expenses paid and the provision of a job in the college library.
“It’s pretty exciting,” the Gawler Eagles Soccer Club striker said. “I am looking forward to a new challenge even though it will be a bit scary.”
Lauren was one of many female soccer players who tried out for the scholarship, under the guidance of Football Federation Australia.
During the try-outs Lauren was put through her paces in a range of drills as scouts from the US colleges looked on.
Her skills and demeanour must have impressed them as she was asked back for an interview before receiving a letter in the mail last week informing her of her scholarship success.
While details are yet to be confirmed, Lauren thinks she will be heading to the US at the end of the year and is waiting to hear what college she will be posted to.
“Women’s soccer is huge in the US,” Lauren said. “This scholarship will open up other opportunities like the chance to be scouted to another college or even to a European club. Breaking into the big league would be amazing and certainly something I will aim towards.”
Soccer talent runs in the family, Lauren’s cousin Frank Lagana represented Australia and also played in Italy.
“He’s been a bit of a role model,” Lauren said. “He’s the one who drives me to improve my skills and on-field performance.”
