Rams claim victory

10/06/2008 5:24:00 PM
The Barossa Rams continued their good run of form on Saturday with wins to both grades over Old Collegians.

As the game was played on the long weekend many players were asked to run some minutes in the B grade game as well as in the A’s.

Matches against Collegians have been close in recent times and this one started in much the same way.

With no score for the first twenty minutes the spectators were kept interested with both sides running the ball forward at every opportunity only to be held up by crunching tackles.

The Rams forwards continue to do plenty of good work and with the return of Tore Shaw to the flank.

The Rams scored first when Andy Fenton set the backline running into spaces and the ball was spun wide for Phil Warren to score out wide.

Barossa were starting to gain the upper hand, their tackles took down opponents, the forwards won plenty of loose ball and Fenton and Shamus O’Reilly combined in the inside backs to put Old Collegians on the back foot.

O’Reilly scored the Rams second before the break with Shaw converting to extend the lead to 12 points. Collegians got one back close to half time against the run of play.

The second half saw the Rams continue to get plenty of the ball through hard work in the forwards who were now pushing Old Collegians off their own scrum feeds.

Todd Reithmuller was finding room to run as the Rams inside backs continued to send the ball in his direction. Reithmuller was the next Rams try scorer when he stepped through the Collegians line.

Shaw made no mistake with the conversion.

The Barossa’s fourth try came shortly after when the forwards drove for the line and Shaw crossed close to the posts giving him the easy conversion and the Rams a four try bonus point.

Collegians scored a consolation nearing full time but the Rams had the victory needed to secure their third position on the table for another week.

Final Score: Barossa Rams 26 d. Old Collegians 14

Scorers: Tries - P Warren, S O’Reilly, T Reithmuller, T Shaw. Conversions- T Shaw (3).

Best Players: T Reithmuller, A Fenton, T Shaw.

Earlier in the day the Rams B’s scored their third victory from their past three outings with a four try to nil win over Old Collegians.

Bolstered by cameos from some A grade players the Rams controlled most parts of the game. Barossa were able to stop any threats from Collegians and the combination of Andy Anderson, Tim Grigg and Nigel Peters in the backs ran the ball at and through the Old Colls defence on many occasions. The forward pack was in control all game with three of the four tries coming from the pack and the fourth set up by them.

Final Score: Barossa Rams B’s 24 d. Old Collegians 0

Scorers: Tries - T Shaw, B Mackay, N Peters, J Cameron. Conversions - B.Mackay (2)

Best Players: B Mackay, N Peters, J Cameron.

The Rams Under 12’s had their second outing of the season at Womma Road against Old Collegians.

Despite the final score of 5-24 the Rams played a very good game. The forwards were dominant and the backs looked good when they had the ball. More work on the defensive aspects of the game will see them on the winners list shortly.
