Top seed Martin Knight from New Zealand played some brilliant squash on Saturday to take out the Barossa Valley Open Squash tournament in Tanunda.
But it was not an easy win for Knight who was taken to five sets by talented Queensland junior Zac Alexander.
The match lasted almost 80 minutes filled with rallies of 75 or more shots. The final score being 11-9, 11-2, 10-11 (0-2), 7-11, 11-8.
Both had comfortable three-set wins to make it to the grand final but put on a talented display of squash for a huge gallery of spectators during their final clash.
Having competitors of this standard playing in the Barossa was an excellent opportunity for many locals to view world-class squash on their home courts.
During the presentations local event organiser Rob Browne said: “We are privileged to have such talented squash players visit this region, and hopefully we can make this event a permanent fixture on the Australian squash calendar.”
The professional players will be returning to South Australia again in late July to contest the SA and Australian Open events at Clare.
