Team Waterhouse happy with Express delivery

GAI WATERHOUSE'S red-hot favourite, Turf Express, might not have looked impressive when making it two wins from as many starts in yesterday's Inglis Classic Sale Handicap at Randwick but don't bale out.

"I asked him to do a lot more today, he was so lost in front," Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Blake Shinn said.

"I think he wants a set of blinkers just to make him concentrate. In the run, he was off the bit. I tried to stoke him up early but once he got clear he just got lost and wandered about.

"He may not have looked that impressive, but I know he has a lot in the tank. He is going to improve with racing. He has had a good blow - he is a big, gross horse, he has a big future."

Waterhouse wasn't at Randwick as she is on holiday in the Galapagos Islands. "She is diving with seals," Waterhouse's trusted lieutenant Tania Rouse said.

Rouse agreed with stable jockey Shinn when asked about Turf Express, which is owned by Filipino businessman Henry Cojuangco, whose brother Eduardo owns the Gooree Stud at Mudgee.

"He is a pretty laid-back individual, only has to do what he has to," Rouse said.

"He had to do plenty of work early in the race, relaxed when he got to the front.

'Blake wanted to be positive with him, get him out and put him into the race. With these two-year-old races you've got to put them into the race, so many brilliant horses running around everywhere, you put yourself in front you make you're own luck."

Citing Turf Express's dam, Newscaster, Rouse said: "The way he relaxes, he'll probably run further.

"He has still hit the line pretty nicely. I'm not 100 per cent sure if he gets tipped out for a couple of weeks and gets brought back for the better races or press on. Gai just wanted to see how he ran today, hoped to get his head in front again, and make a decision from there."

Turf Express accounted for wayward filly Henriette by three-quarters of a length, with Real Try a close third. Henriette's rider, apprentice Peter Wells, was warned by stewards about excessive use of the whip on juveniles.
